Couple finds out wife is pregnant, thanks to Fitbit (and Reddit)

David Trinidad thought his wife's Fitbit was broken when he posted her heart rate stats on Reddit.

When Ivonne Trinidad's Fitbit started acting up, her husband did what many would do: he turned to the internet for answers. As David Trinidad tells As It Happens host Carol Off, "the Reddit forum...had given me some user tricks and tips before."

The problem was with her Fitbit readout. It was showing an elevated heart rate, even though she hadn't exercised that day. According to Trinidad, "she had recorded ten hours in what Fitbit describes as 'the fat-burning zone.'"

Several Redditors suggested there was a problem with the Fitbit's heart-rate sensor, which had been "wonky" since a recent operating system update. But one response stood out: "Is it a possibility she is pregnant?"
One Redditor raised a possibility the Trinidad's had not considered: that the elevated heart rate might be a sign that Ivonne is pregnant. (Reddit)
He responded: "If that's the case, and I'm going to be a dad, I've got to worry about my own heart rate!"

Indeed, it was the case. Trinidad immediately called his wife, and told her to pick up a few pregnancy tests. She picked up ten. "It was like an assembly line. It was just positive, positive, positive, positive."

Since finding out the good news, the couple has got in touch with the original Redditor who suggested Ivonne Trinidad might be pregnant, who is a mother herself. She was delighted, and said she was happy to give any advice to the first-time parents.

"We're definitely going to set up a playdate."
