As It Happens

As It Happens: Friday Edition

Friday, May 1, 2015

Part One

Baltimore dad
They wanted him to set an example. Instead, his parents believe he's being made an example of: after a teenager turns himself in for smashing a police car windshield in Baltimore, bail is set at an exorbitant half-million dollars.

Baltimore activist
Baltimore's chief prosecutor charges six police officers in the death of Freddie Gray -- and an activist tells us how protesters are responding to that announcement.

Journal apology
First outrage, then an apology, after two female scientists are told they'd have a better chance of publishing their research if some men worked on it first.

Part Two

BC phone gone
A resident of too-remote-for-cell-reception Coalmont, BC says the place is unsafe, after a local feud turns vehicularly violent -- and takes out the town's only public phone.

San Diego fisherman
California fisherman Dan Carlin wishes he couldn't explain what it was like to be knocked overboard and pulled underwater -- but he can, and he will.

Part Three

Nepal journalist
As anger grows in communities waiting for aid to arrive, a Nepalese journalist fears the deep civil unrest brewing in the mountains of his country could become worse.

Mobile cinema
It's probably not the best place to watch the movie "Speed". But if you have a couple hundred thousand dollars, you can buy a bus that's also a movie theatre -- one of the U.K.'s vintage mobile cinemas.
