What's blocked on Weibo, China's popular social media site

What words are banned on China's popular social media site Weibo, and why? Listen to Day 6's interview with the publisher of the book 'Blocked on Weibo' to learn more.

Weibo — a Chinese social media site — has more than 600 million users and a slew of banned words.

There are about 160 words you can’t search for and some that seem to change daily.

Jason Q. Ng, a Google Policy Fellow at the University of Toronto's Citizen Lab, published a book called Blocked on Weibo to explain some of the bans.

"Words that are calling for people to gather are certainly a red flag in online speech," Ng told Day 6’s Brent Bambury. "So those are the types of things that would trigger either the censors or internet police to scrutinize your post more carefully."
