- Memorable quotes from books written by Joan Rivers
Rivers — who once said that “a funeral is just a red carpet show for dead people” — described the kind of funeral she wanted in her 2012 book, I Hate Everyone …Starting With Me.
“I want paparazzi and I want publicists making a scene! I want it to be Hollywood all the way,” she wrote.
“I want Meryl Streep crying, in five different accents. I don’t want a eulogy.…I want to look gorgeous, better dead than I do alive. I want to be buried in a Valentino gown, I want Harry Winston to make me a toe tag. I want a wind machine so strong that even in the casket, my hair will be blowing more than Beyonce’s on stage.”
Friends included politicians, royalty
The comedian had a wide circle of friends including former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and his wife Mila.
Rivers first meeting with the former PM was at gala celebration of Brian Mulroney's 65th birthday.
"She said the first time she met Brian Mulroney and then met his wife that she was sure I was his third wife because of the jewelry I was wearing," Mila Mulroney recalls.
Mulroney met Rivers more than twenty years ago through a mutual friend who had worked with former American first lady Nancy Reagan. The Mulroneys were living in 24 Sussex at the time.
The two hit it off, and they met over the years at dinners and events in New York, Montreal, Florida, and elsewhere.
Across the Atlantic, Prince Charles and Camilla released a statement saying they were "deeply saddened" to hear of the performer's death. Rivers was a guest at the 2005 wedding of Charles and Camilla.
"Joan Rivers was an extraordinary woman with an original and indefatigable spirit, an unstoppable sense of humour and an enormous zest for life. She will be hugely missed and utterly irreplaceable."
