Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has now admitted that he went into rehab in May to fight a dependency on pain and sleep medication.

At the time, the rocker had said he needed to take time off to recuperate from foot surgery.

"To have your feet done, to have your leg done, you have to be on narcotics," Tyler revealed on Friday. "You have to be on sleep aids at night … I didn't like the me that was me."

Tyler had several foot surgeries and he says the procedures were to correct longtime injuries which were a result of his physical performances on stage.

"This was a month ago, so I just put the brakes on and checked into detox and just pulled the plug on all of it," said the  60-year-old singer as he and bandmates promoted Guitar Hero 3: Aerosmith Edition to the media in New York City on Friday.

Rumours were rife last month about the singer abusing drugs again.

Tyler was known for heavy alcohol and drug use during the 1970s and 1980s but has purportedly been clean ever since emerging from rehab in 1986.

Formed in Boston in 1970, Aerosmith has scored 21 Top 40 Billboard hits including Sweet Emotion, Dream On and Walk This Way.
