The latest YA novel-turned-movie follows the dystopian teen tale formula to a T, says Eli Glasner.

Divergent, based on the young adult novel by Veronica Roth, follows the dystopian teen tale formula to a T, says CBC film reviewer Eli Glasner.

Starring Shailene Woodley (who's being touted as the next Jennifer Lawrence), the film kicks off the latest movie franchise centred on a teen who doesn't fit into her society's pre-arranged roles.

Though many teen-oriented movies seem to have moved far from John Hughes' tales of high school hazing to the epic or post-apocalyptic life-or-death battles depicted in franchises such as Twilight and The Hunger Games, today's films still boil down to youthful rebellion.
