Pregnant woman en route to Windsor hospital goes into labour after car crash
'I was panicking. I didn't know what was going on with us'
It was the last thing Irene White and her partner Joey Toth were expecting on their drive to the hospital Wednesday for a scheduled C-section.
A block from their home, they were hit by a car.
"It was pretty serious," said White. "I panicked. The airbags went off. The car doors were locked."
When White got out of the car, she lay on ground — and went into labour. But she couldn't feel the baby moving.
Luckily, a police officer witnessed the crash and came over to their rescue.
"She did a great job," White said. "She calmed me down, because I was panicking. I didn't know what was going on with us."
An ambulance arrived within a few minutes and took White to the hospital, where she was able to have the C-section and successfully deliver a healthy daughter, Sarayah Jo Toth.
"The car was totalled, so it could have been really bad," White said.
The accident has left the mother with bruising on her legs and around her stomach from the seat belts, but is otherwise doing fine.
"[Sarayah is] actually named after both her grandpas," she said, choking back tears. "They've passed. I think they helped keep her safe."
Toth said there are no words that can describe how worried he was after the car was hit.
"It's amazing," he said. "This is something you read about or watch."
He walked away with some bumps and bruises, but said he's "relieved. A little sore, but relieved."
