A woman has died after she was hit by a car in Regent Park early Thursday afternoon, Toronto police said.

Emergency services were called to the area of Regent Park Boulevard and Dundas Street East at about 1:20 p.m., according to Sgt. Brett Moore of the force's traffic services division.

According to Moore, the woman was on foot, possibly crossing the street, when she was struck by a vehicle travelling eastbound on Dundas.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A second person was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, paramedics said.

A male left the vehicle, Moore said, and walked away from the scene. He was arrested in a nearby business by officers from 51 Division.

Earlier, the official police Twitter feed said a man had been arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

Moore said several witnesses have already come forward, and investigators have secured some surveillance footage.

A stretch of Dundas Street had been closed for the investigation, but has since reopened.
