Fire crews continue to battle a blaze — and the weather — at the site of the derailment near Gogama, Ont.

Train operators and safety experts continued to clean up Monday after seven cars caught fire when a CN train carrying crude oil derailed Saturday night in northern Ontario.

Temperatures fell to -40 C overnight as crews worked to clean the mess in snowy conditions.

CN responders were able to remove the derailed cars from the right of way allowing workers to get closer to the core of the derailment where a fire was still burning Monday, according to Patrick Waldron, a spokesman with CN.

"Our environmental crews have determined the spilled product has been contained in the derailment area on the frozen, snow covered surface. No waterways appear to have been affected by the spilled product," Waldron said in a statement.

The Transportation Safety Board said crews are working to reopen the rail line.

"I would expect that once the site is safe and the fire is under control that they will move ahead with trying to get that line open," Rob Johnston, a spokesperson with the TSB said
