Greater Sudbury Public Library hopes you'll take the kids snowshoeing

If you happen to be browsing the shelves at a library in Greater Sudbury, you might also want to check out something that'll get you out of that comfortable reading chair.

In Sudbury, if you have a library card, you can sign out a pair of snowshoes. We spoke about this new option with Jessica Watts of the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

If you happen to be browsing the shelves at a public library in Greater Sudbury, you might also want to check out something that'll get you out of that comfortable reading chair.

Six branches of the library have snowshoes available to lend

Jessica Watts with the library said she saw the idea years ago at the Petawawa library, "but it came to us recently through the Healthy Kids Campaign that's happening in Sudbury."

Along with pairs of snowshoes for adults and kids to borrow, the library gives out a handout for novices, "and it includes some resources, some tips, some tricks of how to get up hills and whatnot," she said.

"We also on our web site have a page now dedicated to snowshoe lending, and it has a number of links that help people learn to snowshoe, and give some tips ... [for] snowshoeing with children, 'cause we certainly would hope that we can get some families out."

Six libraries in Greater Sudbury are participating:

  • Garson
  • Levack
  • Onaping
  • Lively
  • Main Branch (downtown)
  • South End
  • Valley East

Snowshoes can be taken out for a week at a time with a valid library card, and they can be placed on hold in advance of pick-up.
