The crash caused freight cars to derail north of the village of Gerald, about 200 kilometres east of Regina.
RCMP says no liquid spills were reported, but some dried items and material goods spilled.
A photo posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) by user Glen Appleby showed numerous freight cars piled up at what he said was the scene of the crash.
Drivers are asked to avoid Range Road 1322. The road will be closed overnight while an RCMP accident reconstructionist investigates.
RCMP haven't released the name of the man who died.
