The Saskatoon Police Service says a man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after he was shot by officers responding to an altercation at an Avenue L residence on Wednesday.

Officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Avenue L S. just before noon on Wednesday with a report of an incident involving an armed man, according to a Saskatoon Police Service news release.

A caller reported that a physical altercation took place at the door of the home, and alleged that a 35-year-old suspect fled on foot, armed with a handgun and machete, police said.

The man was found a short time later at Avenue U S. and 22nd Street W. Police fired several shots during a confrontation, the news release said, and the man suffered what police described as "a non-life-threatening wound." He was taken to hospital for treatment, police said.

As of mid-afternoon Wednesday, traffic restrictions remain in place in the area of 22nd Street and Avenues U and W, police said in their news release.

The police service released no other details about the Wednesday incident.

The Regina Police Service and two provincially assigned independent investigative observers will look into the incident, according to Saskatoon police.
