A patient at a P.E.I. psychiatric hospital has died suddenly and unexpectedly, officials say.

Charlottetown Police responded to a call from Hillsborough Hospital on the evening of Dec. 1. They found a woman, 47, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputy Chief Richard Collins said police have finished their investigation and concluded there was no foul play in the incident. The matter is in the hands of the coroner and health officials. They will report the cause and manner of death.

Margaret Kennedy, the director of Mental Health and Addictions, said Health P.E.I. can't discuss any details about the incident.

She said no other patients, staff or visiting family members were involved and that the facility is a safe and secure place.

Kennedy said staff and patients are saddened by the death and the focus is on supporting them through the loss.

Health officials confirmed an internal review of the death is underway.
