Ontario's police watchdog is investigating the death of a 23-year-old man who fell 12 storeys from an east Ottawa apartment Wednesday.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a news release the man fell from an apartment window.

The SIU said according to their preliminary investigation, at about 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Ottawa Police Service officers went to 2020 Jasmine Crescent to execute a search warrant.

"Soon after the officers breached the door of an apartment unit on the 12th floor, a man fell from the window the ground below," states the release.

SIU said the man was given medical aid, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator are working on the case.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault.

Corrections

  • A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the man fell from the apartment balcony. In fact, he fell from a window, according to the SIU.
