Fierce winds during Wednesday's blizzard blew part of the roof off an apartment building in the Halifax neighbourhood of Fairview.

The storm brought winds of more than 160 km/h to parts of Nova Scotia and as much as 40 centimetres of snow.

Harold Marryatt, the property manager of the damaged building on Main Avenue in Fairview, said the damage is still being assessed but he estimates it will cost about $150,000 to $200,000 to repair the roof.

More than 40 people live in the apartment building.

Marryatt said he thought the storm was dying down for the night and did not expect the winds that howled for hours after the snow stopped falling.

"The section, if not all of our roof, has blown off. You can't get up on the roof at this point because of the winds," he says.

No one was hurt and Marryatt said no units in the building were damaged.

"If we had rain now, we'd have a problem inside," he said.

Marryatt said although the front entrance is blocked by debris, no one in the building has been displaced.
