The Halifax skating oval opened for the winter skating season on Monday morning and fans wasted no time in lacing up and hitting the ice.

It also marked opening day for the new Emera Oval building, a heated facility housing washrooms, change areas and skates, helmets, sledges and snowshoes for loan.

One new addition this year is that skates won't be the only option for getting around the ice. Sledge hockey sledges will be available.

Snowshoes to be used at the nearby Halifax Common will also be available.

All children 12 and under must wear an approved helmet.
