Year-round facility will house heated washrooms and speedy sanitizer for loaned gear
Halifax's new Emera Oval building opens next week — and it's a blank slate.
Staff wanted to open it for the skating season, so that left the building unnamed and the walls stark white. They plan to upgrade it over the coming months.

Here's a look at the numbers behind the new facility.
- $2.67 million + 2.5 per cent: Final cost of the new building. The percentage was the cost of decontaminating the site.
- 4,500 square feet: Footprint of the building. The roof juts out to allow space for people to be covered if the weather changes.
- 992: Pairs of skates they currently have to loan for free.
- 500: Helmets they have — give or take a few.
- 13: Size of skates in short supply. If you have a spare pair or spot a good sale, tell them. Size 13 skates cost more than other sizes.
- Three: Indoor — heated — washrooms. Female, male and family or gender neutral. The floors are rubber so people can wear their skates inside.
- Two: Ice resurfacers that will be stored in the maintenance side of the building.
- One + One: One eco-friendly sterilizing machine has been installed and another's set to arrive soon. Every pair of skates and every helmet will go through the machine after they've been used. They can be cleaned in as little as 20 minutes.
- One: Full-time staff member on site.
The Oval will open Monday, weather permitting. The building will open year-round, although summer activities aren't yet laid out.
