Forestry industry awaits clearcutting details

Nova Scotia's forestry industry expects to learn more about the province's clearcutting policy Tuesday when the government finally announces its natural resources strategy.

The plan will outline the province's goals for forests, parks, minerals and biodiversity over the next couple of decades.

The government has already said it plans to reduce clearcutting by 50 per cent over five years.

Now the forestry industry is waiting to hear the details.

Steve Talbot, with the Forest Products Association of Nova Scotia, said people in the industry met with government officials this summer to clarify the definition of clearcutting.

"I'm assuming that they have compiled what they got from those meetings and will be coming up with some sort of definition," he said.

Talbot expects the province's natural resources plan will have a big impact on his industry.

The strategy is coming eight months later than promised.
