Repulse Bay to officially change name to Naujaat July 2

The hamlet of Repulse Bay, Nunavut, will change its name to traditional Inuktitut name Naujaat on July 2 after the minister of Community and Government Services recently approved the community's request.

Traditional Inuktitut name means 'nesting place of seagulls'

The Hamlet of Repulse Bay, Nunavut, will change its name to its traditional Inuktitut name Naujaat on July 2.

Repulse Bay is the 10th Nunavut community to officially change its community name to Inuktut

Last year, residents voted narrowly in favour of changing the official name of the hamlet. The minister of Community and Government Services recently approved the community's request.

The change will take effect on Hamlet Day, July 2. Elizabeth Kusugak, who works with the municipality, says the community will hold a special event to mark the change.

A lot also needs to be done before then.

"We need our cheques changed," she said. "It says Municipality of Repulse Bay and it has to be changed to Municipality of Naujaat. All our letterheads say Municipality of Repulse Bay and those have to be changed, too."

Kusugak says the hamlet is trying to do as much as it can this month before the end of the fiscal year.

According to the hamlet's website, Naujaat means "a nesting place for seagulls" in Inuktitut.
