Pangnirtung releases catalogue of research projects in area
45 past and present projects included in catalogue
The hamlet of Pangnirtung, Nunavut, has released a catalogue compiling information of about 45 past and present research projects around the community.
It includes information about projects from various disciplines such as health, fisheries and wildlife, and physical and social sciences.
"The objective was to help improve the communication of research projects and the communication between researchers and the community," said Matthew Miller, a co-ordinator of the project with the hamlet.
"A summary for each project is presented that includes contact information of researchers, timeline of research and a brief outline each project with maps and photos."
The catalogue is available in both English and Inuktitut and was a community effort involving local translators, a local photographer and a local graphic design artist.
"It's going to be very helpful for researchers, too, because it compiles data from academic institutions, from governments, from NGOs," said Miller.
"It will also promote research, although that wasn't the main goal."
Miller says he hopes the catalogue will be built upon in the future.
"There are some plans in the works," she said. "If different parties get involved, it could get turned into a database."
