Iqaluit airport fire under investigation as work resumes

No cause has been determined as the investigation continues into why a roof caught fire at Iqaluit's new airport terminal over the weekend.

It's not clear if the fire will delay the construction timeline

Construction crews are back working on Iqaluit's new airport terminal as investigators continue to try to figure out what caused a roof fire Saturday night.

Nunavut's Office of the Fire Marshal and the Iqaluit Fire Department spent Tuesday investigating how the fire started but have yet to determine a cause.

"It is not clear if this fire will have any effect on the schedule for completion of the Iqaluit International Airport Improvement Project," read a press release by the territory's Department of Economic Development and Transportation.

The construction of the new terminal is part of a $300 million renovation of the airport, scheduled to be completed by the end of 2017.

"An engineering investigation by the design builder is necessary beforehand to determine the extent of fire and water damage. However, the fire is not expected to have any effect on the cost of the project for the Government of Nunavut."
