Two sealift cargo ships that were stuck in ice in Frobisher Bay have finally made it to Iqaluit.

The Anna Desgagnes and MV Qamutiq arrived at the city around 10 a.m. local time this morning, escorted by two Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers.

The ships spent several days about 150 kilometres away from the city battling thick ice that had drifted into Frobisher Bay. Officials, elders, and people in the shipping industry say it's a particularly bad year for ice along the East Baffin coast.

Now the Coast Guard icebreakers will get set to escort ships out of Iqaluit.
