Wednesday will be 'wet and wild' across Newfoundland's Avalon, says meteorologist
Coastal flood warnings for Avalon Peninsula's south coast and Placentia Bay
Eastern Newfoundland will have a wet and windy Wednesday.
Environment Canada has issued warnings for coastal flooding, and a rainfall warning for southern, northeastern and eastern Newfoundland.
Justin Boudreau, a meteorologist at the Gander weather office, said the northern Avalon Peninsula could get between 20 to 40 millimetres of rain throughout Wednesday, while the southern Avalon and Burin Peninsula could get as much as 80 mm.
"So just a wet and wild one," he told CBC Radio's The St. John's Morning Show.
Boudreau said it will get windy on Wednesday afternoon, with gusts as high as 80 kilometres per hour, and reaching 100 kilometres per hour in some areas.
Boudreau said the Clarenville and Bonavista areas are also getting about 10 to 20 mm, and the southwest coast could get between 15 and 30mm of rain, which will end Wednesday evening.
"They'll probably change over to snow for a few hours, so you might pick up a centimetre or two, but it should taper off quickly once it changes over," said Boudreau.
Flood warnings
There are coastal flood warnings for the Avalon Peninsula's south coast as well as Placentia Bay.
"We are expecting some storm surge. So there's a coastal flooding warning out for sort of those coastlines. That should be at high tide this evening," said Boudreau.
He added there's a special weather statement for the northeast coast for high tide on Thursday morning.
"It's going to be getting close and sometimes that's enough to cause some minor issues," said Boudreau.
