Union, Metrobus reach tentative deal
Buses will be back on the roads soon if workers and Metrobus ratify the deal
The union representing striking public transportation workers and St. John's Metrobus have reached a tentative deal, according to a Metrobus news release.
It says Metrobus and the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1462 reached a tentative collective agreement early Thursday morning.
In the release, Judy Powell, Metrobus's general manager, said she was happy the strike is coming to an end. "We realize how difficult this strike has been for our customers and we’re very eager to get our buses back on the road," she said.
Details of the agreement will not be released until the union executive reviews the package with its members.
Metrobus says full service will resume by Monday morning if the deal is ratified by the union members and St. John's Transportation Comission.
About 100 Metrobus workers have been on strike since early November.
The dispute focused on health benefits. Metrobus wanted new employees to take on a greater share of health care benefits coverage.
