St. John's food drive exceeded expectations with 111,000 lbs. donated
City still has to collect from condos, apartments
Organizers of this week's door-to-door food drive in all five wards in St. John's say the effort has exceeded expectations.
Each day this week, city workers went to homes in a different ward - Ward 1 on Monday, Ward 2 on Tuesday, and so on.
Jane Williams, with the city, puts Ward 4 in the lead with the most donations.
According to the City of St. John's Twitter page, the donation totals are as follows.
- Ward 1: 22,000 lbs.
- Ward 2: 17,250 lbs.
- Ward 3: 15,500 lbs.
- Ward 4: 24,500 lbs.
- Ward 5: 31,750 lbs.
The grand total of donations came in at 111,000 lbs., for a value of $277,500. The goal was 100,000 lbs.
"The guys who have been collecting all of this, they're pleasantly surprised. I didn't think people were that generous is the comment I get from everybody," said Williams.
And there's still more to come. On Monday, city workers will be hitting up the city's condos and apartment buildings to collect donations for the Community Food Sharing Association.
The annual door-to-door drive used to be an initiative by Canada Post, but since the cuts to home mail delivery, the city has decided to take over.
Williams said there were a few hitches this year, but they're hoping to get them worked out for next year.
