Beefing up the menu at MUN, more food options coming to St. John's campus

Students at Memorial University of Newfoundland will soon have more food options to chose from on the St. John's campus.

Local restaurant Mustang Sally's and a Tim Hortons kiosk will be the latest culinary additions to campus starting in January.

It will be the second location for the restaurant, which disappeared from the St. John's gastro scene for several years before reopening earlier this year on Water Street.

Rex Coffin, director of ancillary operations at Memorial, said it will offer more options for students with specific dietary requirements.

"It's a limited but interestingly diverse menu," Coffin said. "They have good options for vegetarian, and halal and vegan and those sorts of things, in addition to really interesting limited menu options in their stir fries and their wraps."
  
The Tim Hortons kiosk will be located in the lower atrium of the Arts and Administration Building.

It will be operated by Aramark, the food service contractor for residence and all other campus food stands apart from the food court.

Aramark came under fire in March 2015 after students posted photos on social media of mouldy and undercooked food served in the dining hall.

Coffin said the improvements since then have been significant.

"So far this year things have been going quite smoothly," he said. "We all learned from that experience … lots of renewed and ongoing focus on food safety."

"We've done a lot down in the residence area to revise the menu and implement some improvements in terms of the culinary side of things."
