Royal Newfoundland Constabulary officer Noelle Laite has been released from custody on bail while her conviction is being appealed.

Laite was sentenced Monday to four months in jail for assault and assault causing bodily harm against her former intimate partner. Immediately following the decision Laite was taken into custody, where she stayed for three days until being released Thursday.

Her release comes with conditions, including keeping the peace and being of good behaviour, having no contact with her former partner and living at a specific address. She's also forbidden from leaving the province and had to surrender her passport.

Laite's sentence was higher than what was asked for by her lawyer and the Crown, neither of which suggested a custodial sentence be imposed. Defence lawyer Robby Ash asked for a suspended sentence followed by probation while the Crown sought a conditional sentence order followed by probation.

The RNC officer has been suspended without pay since being convicted in early January of assaulting her former intimate partner over the span of two years.
