A man convicted of smashing a beer bottle over his wife's head has been released from custody as his appeal works its way through the courts.

Jason Churchill, 41, was sentenced one week ago to 22 months in jail on a charge of aggravated assault on his wife Joan Barry.

Barry was left with blurred vision and a split cornea after the attack last summer.

Churchill was released on a recognizance after his bail hearing was heard at the Newfoundland and Labrador Court of Appeal in St. John's.

In an interview with CBC Radio Monday, Barry said she was worried Churchill would be freed.
