Police charge inmate for assaulting 2 female correctional officers

A 37-year-old man has been charged with two counts of assault. Police say two women suffered injuries, and one had to be taken to the hospital.

A 37-year-old inmate has been charged for assaulting two correctional officers, according to police.

The inmate was being held in the lockup on Water Street in St. John's, where the alleged incident happened on Oct. 8, according to a statement from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary. 

Two female officers suffered injuries, with one sustaining what the force described as serious injuries that required treatement at a hospital. She was later released. 

"The other correctional officer received minor injuries but did not require medical treatment," Cst. James Cadigan said in a statement. 

The man was charged with assault and assault causing bodily harm. The inmate will appear in provincial court at a later date.
