A pair of target shooters ended a lengthy gold medal drought for this province at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C., on Monday.

Samantha Marsh, 20, and Hayley Barrett, 15, won gold in the women’s 10-metre rifle team category, while William Dalton, 16, and Daniel Dimitrov, 18, took silver in the men's rifle team event.

Marsh is from Mount Pearl and Barrett is from the Goulds. Dalton and Dimitrov are from St. John's.

"It was a good day by any standard," Chef de Mission Rod Snow wrote on the Team NL online newsletter.

"It’s not all about medals or wins or losses, but maybe today it was and we couldn't be prouder."

It was the first Canada Games gold medal for an athlete from this province since 2001 when Adam Morgan claimed a gold and two silver medals at the Summer Games in London, On.

The last Winter Games gold for this province came 16 years ago at the 1999 Games in Corner Brook where athletes from this province took home a record haul of six gold medals in cross-country skiing and boxing.

Marsh has been a member of the province's junior shooting team since 2008. This is her second appearance at a Canada Games.

Barrett has been shooting for almost two years.

Dalton and Dimitrov have been shooting for three-and-a-half years. This is the first Canada Games appearance for both athletes.
