The new school in Quispamsis will delay its opening by one day because more time is needed to prepare classrooms, according to the Anglophone South School District.

Zoë Watson, the district superintendent, said staff still have more work to do at the new Chris Saunders Memorial Elementary School

Custodial staff also wanted an extra day to clean.

Watson said teachers first came into the building on Monday and attended meetings in addition to unpacking and setting up classrooms.

The school will hold an open house for families on Tuesday evening and will be open for students next Wednesday.

The new K-5 school can hold up to 350 students.

The school is named after Chris Saunders, who grew up in Quispamsis and later joined the Royal Canadian Navy, serving as a lieutenant on board the submarine HMCS Chicoutimi. He died in the line of duty in 2004.
