Paroled killer sent back to prison

Scott Curtis is back in prison after his day parole at a halfway house in Saint John was revoked. Curtis is serving a life sentence for his role in the death of a man at Black River Bridge on the Miramichi in 1986.

Curtis and Todd Matchett were accomplices of the notorious Miramichi killer, Alan Leger.

Curtis fought hard last year to get day parole in Saint John. There were concerns about his possible involvement in an armed robbery and his lack of cooperation with officials.

Now, the parole board's patience has run out. Brian Chase of the parole board says, "I don't think he was very honest with his case management team and parole officer of his whereabouts and his business dealings and that sort of thing."

The board members say they are dissappointed Curtis opened up a pawnshop, saying that the shop was used by known criminals. They don't want Curtis hanging out with them.

Nor do they like the fact that Curtis doesn't want to tell officials what he was up to or with whom he was meeting. They also accuse him of drug use and dishonesty.

They conclude he has deliberately chosen to sabotage his case for parole, so they've taken it away. Chase says it's unlikely Curtis will be allowed out for a long time.

"It will depend. He can apply at any time for another release. Whether it will be supported or accepted by the parole board is a different story."

The parole board's report warns that Curtis is manipulative and has tried to intimidate parole officers.

Curtis is being detained at the Springhill penal institution in Nova Scotia.
