Lawyers scramble for jurors in Grand Manan riot trial

Court sheriffs had to hit the street of St. Andrews, N.B. this weekend to fill the final two spots in a 12-member jury that will hear the trial of five Grand Manan men charged in connection with a riot.

Court sheriffs had to hit the street of St. Andrews, N.B.,this weekend to fill the final two spots in a 12-member jury that will hear the trial of five Grand Manan men charged in connection with a riot.

The men arefacing multiple chargesresulting froma four-hourmelee in the small community of Castalialast July,when a house was lit on fire, shots were fired into a car,and fights broke out between island residents.

The charges against the men include arson and dangerous use of a firearm.

Approximately350 peoplewere calledto jury selection on Saturday morning. When lawyerswere only able to choose10 people from that group,sheriffs had to leave the court and round up more candidates to fill the last two slots.

The trial is expected to last two weeks.

The man who lived in the house that was burned in the riot will be in court this December to face charges stemming from another incident.
