Landlord is 'haunted' by Richard Oland's office

Saint John police have finished gathering evidence from the office building where the body of Richard Oland was found last Thursday, and now the landlord is left with the clean up of the office.

"We're really, really hurting over this. Really hurting," said John Ainsworth, who owns the Canterbury Street building, where Oland's office was located on the second floor for about 10 years.

Investigators say the prominent businessman was the victim of a homicide. For nearly a week, police processed the scene, gathering evidence.

Ainsworth said they released the office back to him on Tuesday night with one condition — that he not allow people into the office to take pictures, which could be released without consent.

Ainsworth, who also runs the printing shop downstairs, said he doesn't know what state the office is in.

"I'm not that macabre to want to see it, no," he said, adding that he plans to hire professional cleaners.

"We're here now every day and having to deal with, you know, like the ghost of it, and it's haunting almost to be in a small building and know how bad the thing was," Ainsworth said.

He said he doesn't know any details about the case.

Police still aren't releasing any information about how Oland died, whether any weapons were involved or if there are possible suspects.

Hundreds of people attended Oland's funeral Tuesday in Rothesay, New Brunswick.

Ainsworth has set up a memorial to Oland outside the building and is encouraging people to stop by and sign it.
