Harper, Graham pledge $10M for Fundy Trail Parkway in N.B.

The federal and provincial governments have pledged another $10 million to extend the Fundy Trail Parkway.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper joined Premier Shawn Graham in Moncton on Wednesday where each government anted up $5 million for the tourism project, which will allow people to travel along the Fundy coast from St. Martins to Alma.

The funding will connect Route 111 at St. Martins to Route 116 at Alma, near Fundy National Park.

 "The new link we are building between Route 111 and Route 114 will create well-paying construction jobs, improve the flow of traffic in southern New Brunswick and, of course, boost tourism in the region," Harper said in Moncton.

"This action builds on our government's past support for the parkway including construction of critical sections near the entrance of Fundy National Park."

The new trail will allow motorists to stop at lookouts and places where people can get access to the beach.

The Fundy Trail opened in 1998 and according to the province's Tourism Department has welcomed more than 500,000 visitors.

The Fundy Trail's construction is carrying with it a $58-million tab.

The federal budget in January listed the parkway as an example of a project that would benefit from federal infrastructure funding.

Harper and Graham are also expected to meet privately to discuss other infrastructure projects for New Brunswick.
