An elderly Quebec woman has become the 12th Canadian to die after contracting swine flu, provincial health officials announced Wednesday.
Officials said the woman lived just south of Montreal and was between the ages of 70 and 80.
Wednesday's announcement comes a day after two deaths were reported in Quebec and two in Manitoba.
In total, seven Quebecers, two Ontarians, two Manitobans and one person in Alberta have died after contracting the same strain of H1N1 influenza A virus that was first detected in Mexico in April. More than 4,000 Canadians, including almost 1,000 people from Quebec, have been infected with the virus, and health officials say that number will likely grow.
