Woman killed in highway crash

A 41-year-old Manitoba woman was killed Monday night in a two-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway, just west of Portage la Prairie.

A 41-year-old Manitoba woman was killed Monday night in a two-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway.

The collision happened around 9 p.m. where the Yellowhead Highway — Highway 16 — merges with the Trans-Canada just west of Portage la Prairie, according to RCMP.

The car driven by the woman went through the intersection when another vehicle slammed into the driver's side, RCMP said.

Witnesses reported that the woman's vehicle failed to stop at a red light and the car that struck her had the right of way, police said.

The woman, a resident of Portage la Prairie, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 48-year-old man who was a passenger in the car was transported to hospital in Portage la Prairie with serious injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 60-year-old woman from the Rural Municipality of Shellmouth Boulton, was also taken to hospital in Portage la Prairie General Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol is considered a factor in the crash, which is still being investigated, police said.
