Two men from Portage la Prairie have been charged — one with a dozen offences — after an armed standoff with police that lasted several hours and forced residents on the street to take shelter earlier this week.

The standoff started around 11:30 p.m. Monday, when police found four people barricaded inside a house on Oak Bay, after getting a call about a suspicious man and white car. One of them, a 27-year-old man, had a gun.

RCMP called in an emergency response team with negotiators and an armed vehicle.

Two women ran out of the house when RCMP fired tear gas at the home, but two men, both 27, remained inside.

The RCMP emergency response team eventually busted their way in and arrested the two men on Tuesday morning.
