Man dies of injuries received in Winnipeg fire
Homicide unit investigating after man's injuries deemed suspicious
The Winnipeg Police Homicide Unit is investigating after the death of a man following an apartment fire in the city's downtown.
Firefighters and police were called to the three-storey apartment complex on the 300 block of Carlton Street Saturday at 2:10 a.m. CT.
While crews were fighting the blaze they found a man inside the building with injuries to his upper body.
Police said the injuries were suspicious, because they were not consistent with those received in a fire alone.
The man was taken to hospital in critical condition, but died a short time later.
The homicide unit and the Arson Strike Force are investigating.
If police rule the man's death a homicide, it will be the city's 35th homicide of the year, breaking the record high of 34 set in 2004.
Damage to the apartment complex is estimated at $100,000.
