Machete-wielding suspect shot, killed: police
Deceased had 'extensive' history with police
Const. Jacqueline Chaput said in a statement Sunday that two men were arguing at a residence in the 600 block of Home Street at about 10 p.m. CT.
During the dispute, one brandished a machete and threatened the other man, Chaput said. The men didn't know each other, she added.
The dispute ended with the man with the machete walking away. There were no injuries in the dispute, police said.
Police called to respond to the threat located a suspect about a block away, near Sargent Avenue and Arlington Street, police said.
He was still armed with the machete, Chaput said.
Chaput said despite repeated demands to drop the weapon, the man refused and police shot him. She did not confirm how many times police fired.
The suspect was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died not long after. His identity is not being released as police are still notifying his family.
Chaput said the deceased had "extensive" contact with police in the past. She would not elaborate further.
Homicide detectives have taken charge of the investigation, Chaput said. They're asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at 204-986-6508.
