The event, held Wednesday evening at McNally Robinson Booksellers, was prompted by the deaths of Lisa Gibson and her two young children earlier this summer.
Nicole Gamble, a registered nurse who runs a support group for moms, said women who have a history of depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder are at much higher risk for mental health problems after giving birth.
Nicole Chammartin at the Canadian Mental Health Association said the class discussed signs of mental health issues, what's normal and what's a concern.
Gamble suggested families can help out in many ways, some seemingly small but make a big difference to a struggling mom.
"Help out a little bit with the laundry, maybe helping out with some of the night feeds, maybe drive her to a doctor appointment," she said.
Chammartin said the class was filled to capacity, so a plan is being made for another event in the future.
