Catch of the day: Fishermen save family after boat capsizes on Lake Winnipeg
‘I heard something that I thought was whistling but I guess it was screaming,’ Darren Wojcik says
When Darren Wojcik went out fishing on Sunday, the last thing he expected to do was save a family.
The avid fisherman and some friends were out on Lake Winnipeg when the weather changed and the water became choppy. His crew made their way to Pine Falls and a smoother area in the river where they hit the jackpot and found "a good bunch of fish."
"I heard something that I thought was whistling but I guess it was screaming. We looked over and we saw this little tiny boat that was ... sitting very low in the water," Wojcik said.
Not even 30 seconds after they spotted the boat a wave came over its front and it began to sink, Wojcik said.
The fishing friends kicked into rescue mode and made their way over. Wojcik said they quickly spotted two children and two adults in the water.
"The water was very rough. The boat was going up and down. They were in the water going up and down. I got a big boat going up and down," he said.
"I just wanted the guys to go to the front of the boat and grab them."
They grabbed the children first as another boat showed up to help. Wojcik said they called for the other boat to phone 911 and help one of the adults, while his team pulled in the other.
"It all happened so fast it was like a well-rehearsed field time it was unreal," he said.
The family was shaken and Wojcik said the kids were screaming so they quickly made their way to the dock and a waiting ambulance.
Sunday afternoon, Wojcik shared the story on the FishinMilitia Facebook page where comments praised the group for their heroics. However, Wojcik said it's all just part of the fishing code.
"I'm very glad I did it. I don't feel like a hero. It's what you do, if you see someone in the water you go get them," he said.
