Vegan ice cream in a root-vegetable cone? It's a thing
The ice cream and cones are almost sugar-free, too
Who says dessert has to be unhealthy?
A small restaurant in London, Ont., is offering vegan, gluten-free, soy-free, nut-free ice cream, served on cones made from root vegetables.
And the owner swears it's just as much of a delicious indulgence as the high-sugar, milk-based stuff.
"I love ice cream. It's the one thing that kept me from being completely plant-based for years," said Rebecca Todd, owner of FroZen Scoops and Sweets.
"The concept is a health, or health-ful, dessert situation. And everyone loves ice cream," Todd said.
Many vegan products are nut-based, she said, but she wanted to create a product that is safe for those with soy and nut allergies.
The ice cream is made from a gluten-free steel-cut oat milk, with natural, organic flavours added. There are two cones to choose from, one made out of sweet potato and the other out of roasted beets.
Currently, FroZen is offering four flavours: Dark chocolate chocolate chip; banana fudge; caramel (made out of reduced coconut milk; and moose tracks, which uses Tahini instead of nuts.
"Ice cream is one of my greatest pleasures," Todd said.
