The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) reported six new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, of which four are Western University students.

This means 12 students have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since Sunday. Nine of those Western student cases are linked to the community outbreak declared by the health unit over the weekend

Since Sunday there have been 20 cases reported in the London area and city officials are now issuing fines. This is an escalation from the previous education-based enforcement of health and safety rules.

A local business and employee were both fined $500 on Tuesday for not adhering to the mandatory masking bylaw.

The MLHU reported two COVID-19 recoveries on Wednesday. The number of active cases in Middlesex-London has more than doubled in the last week to 28.

COVID-19 across the region and beyond

The Southwestern Public Health Unit, which includes St. Thomas, Woodstock, and Elgin and Oxford counties, reported four new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday. The local case count is up to 262, with nine known active cases in the region. The majority of cases are people in their 20s, making up 44 per cent of the total.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit reported nine new COVID-19 cases Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Ontario reported 315 additional cases, with Toronto, Ottawa and Peel still making up the bulk of the new cases.

In the coming days, Ontario will announce lower limits on social gathering in a bid to stem the recent increase in COVID-19 cases but the specifics of the guidelines and exactly when they'll be implemented have not been announced.

The current limit on social gathering is 50 people indoors and 100 people outside.
