Snow mixed with ice pellets and freezing rain along with strong winds are in the forecast for Tuesday, Environment Canada says.

The weather agency upgraded a special weather statement to a winter storm warning Monday afternoon.

Up to 20 centimetres of snow and ice pellets could fall in Waterloo region, Wellington county and Guelph, the warning says.

Snow is expected to begin overnight, then will become mixed with, or change over to, ice pellets in the morning. Freezing rain is expected Tuesday afternoon.

"Snow and local blowing snow will begin early Tuesday morning. Snow is expected to transition to a mix of ice pellets and freezing rain Tuesday afternoon," the warning said.

Strong winds from the east, at times gusting up to 70 km/h, will cause blowing snow.

Leaving the area on Tuesday could also be an issue as the weather agency has issued a storm warning for nearly all parts of southern Ontario as a Colorado low moves across the province.

For people who commute into Toronto, up to 25 centimetres of snow is anticipated in that area and the statement warns travel is "likely to be affected."

If you're driving west, London and area isn't expected to get much snow, just 5 centimetres, but freezing rain will be an issue.

North of the region in Grey and Bruce, there's a winter storm warning with up to 35 centimetres expected.
