5 more people arrested after destructive, unsanctioned homecoming event near McMaster: police
Hamilton police says it isn't seeking any more suspects
Five more people have been arrested, Hamilton police say, after a destructive, unsanctioned homecoming event near McMaster University.
Thousands of students flooded Dalewood Avenue in the city's west end on Saturday, Oct. 2, leading to the destruction of a car and vandalized street signs.
The mayor, the city's medical officer of health, McMaster University, local residents and some students denounced the actions of people at the homecoming event.
The five new arrests, announced in a Friday press release, include:
- Two 18-year-old male McMaster University students charged with mischief over $5,000,
- An 18-year-old male Waterloo University student charged with mischief over $5,000,
- An 18-year-old male York University student charged with mischief over $5,000,
- A 20-year-old man from Smithville who isn't a student charged with mischief over $5,000,
Of the 13 arrests made since Oct. 2, at least four of the accused didn't go to McMaster University.
According to Hamilton police, at approximately 12:30 p.m. — just before McMaster Marauders' first home game of the year kicked off — officers responded to a large gathering in the Ainslie Wood area near McMaster University.
By 2 p.m., the crowd had expanded to approximately 5,000 people, police said. Officers said they closed several streets in the area for safety reasons.
"Glass bottles, cans and other objects were thrown at officers and one police vehicle was damaged as a result. There were no serious reported injuries, but several individuals were treated for injuries consistent with falling and other blunt forces as well as excessive alcohol consumption," a police statement released Oct. 3 said.
The police service also said it isn't looking for any more suspects, but witnesses that haven't spoken to police yet are still encouraged to come forward.
