Central Albertans will soon see and hear their own stories on CBC Edmonton and CBC Calgary as a new pop-up bureau is launching in Red Deer.

Over the next several weeks, the CBC Red Deer bureau will explore the issues impacting central Albertans and reflect the distinct and diverse experiences of the community.

The heart and hub of central Alberta, Red Deer is home to more than 100,000 citizens, each with a unique story and perspective on life in Alberta.

CBC has partnered with Red Deer-based journalist Heather Marcoux to serve an important region that has seen multiple newsroom closures in recent years.

Marcoux is the founding editor of The Centre, an independent journalism newsletter serving the Red Deer area.

She has deep roots in central Alberta and got her start in media as a Red Deer College student working at CHCA News in 2007.

She later covered Red Deer city council as a video journalist for Shaw TV before departing for newsrooms in Calgary and Saskatoon.

She then returned home to Red Deer for good, working remotely in digital and print media while enjoying all central Alberta has to offer.
