Cat killings prompt warning

Cat owners in Edmonton are being urged to keep their pets indoors, in the wake of three more suspicious cat killings since Aug. 19 in the southwest end of the city.

In each case, the dead cat was partially dismembered, police said.

Shawna Randolph, spokeswoman for the Edmonton Humane Society, said the recent killings bring the number of cat mutilations in the same area to eight since May.

"We really do want people all over the City of Edmonton to keep their cats indoors at this point," Randolph told CBC News.

"Or if you really feel it's necessary to allow your cat outside, you should really keep it on a leash with you, supervised at all times or in an outdoor enclosure supervised as well."

Randolph wouldn't be specific about where the latest cat killings happened, although she said they were in close proximity to the previous five.

Those deaths happened in the Greenfield neighbourhood.

On May 31, Louise Gunn found the remains of her cat Remington in her neighbour's yard.

The cat had been cut in half.

In mid-July, a cyclist found a cat's body around 39th Avenue and 117th Street Wednesday morning. Like Remington, the cat had been cut in half.
