Man charged after multi-vehicle crash that killed 2
25-year-old taxi passenger died in hospital
A 20-year-old man has been charged with impaired driving in an early morning crash that killed two people in Calgary.
Police say they were called to Macleod Trail and 12th Avenue SE for a crash involving a taxi, an SUV and a sedan just before 2 a.m. MT.
A Cadillac Escalade with three occupants allegedly sped through the red light at the intersection and collided with a Honda Civic and then struck a Toyota Prius taxi on the passenger side, said police in a release.
"It was really loud, we heard a loud sort of crash that woke us up, followed by the car horn, which we assume was impacted from the airbags that didn't shut off for probably about 20 to 30 minutes," said Erin Peterson, who heard the crash from her high-rise.
Six people were injured. The 46-year-old driver of the taxi died at the scene, while his passenger, a 25-year-old woman, died later in hospital.
The 64-year-old male driver of the Honda was also hospitalized with serious injuries.
Two passengers in the Escalade , a 21-year-old and an 18-year-old male, were also transported to hospital, while the driver suffered minor injuries.
The alleged driver of the SUV has been charged with impaired driving causing death, and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm.
Police say he may face further charges in the death of the taxi's passenger.
