The Alberta government is providing $25 million in flood mitigation grants for several southern Alberta communities - including Calgary.

Premier Rachel Notley, Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi and several other leaders gathered on the banks of the Bow River for the announcement Friday.

Calgary will be getting $13 million for projects including the construction of a berm along the Bow River near the Peace Bridge and another berm to protect the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant.

"The flood resilience at the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant will coincide with our planned expansion of Bonnybrook which was helping us deal with the wastewater needs of a growing city and ensure that the people who work there and more importantly that the quality of water downstream of us will remain safe," Nenshi said.

The mayor says there is still more work to be done on the Elbow and Bow River upstream of Calgary.

The other communities benefiting from the grant include Drumheller, Chestermere, Municipal District of Bighorn, Turner Valley and Siksika First Nation.
